Objectives

*The students will start each sentence with a capital letter.

*The students will create their own ocean book.

Activity

The students will select a shape book. (a whale, a fish, or an octopus) The students will use the ocean word wall to fill in the blanks of the book. ( ______ live in the ocean.)  This sentence will be printed on each page. They will write the word on eth line, remembering to use a capital letter.  Then the children will draw a picture to illustrate the sentence.  Each book will include 5 pages.  When the children finish writing and illustrating the book, they may color the pages and the cover. Then they will practice reading their book.

          *This activity will take 2 rotations in my centers to complete.  They will keep the book in their cubbies until it is complete.

Assessment

A checklist will assess their writing project. It should include: name, capital letter to start each sentence, and an illustration on each page.

Materials Needed

Shape books (whale, fish and octopus), ocean word wall, pocket chart, pencils and crayons.

Extensions

As optional homework: I have the students take their book home and read it to 2 people.  Those people sign their name to the back of the book. If they bring it back, I will give them a sticker.
