Title

Introduction to Ocean Unit

Grade Level

Kindergarten

Science Period

Half hour block of time.

 

 

Standards

Science: Earth/Space 2. describe major features of the Earth’s surface. (example: rivers, deserts, mountains, valleys, oceans)

Geography: compare the globe and a map as models of the earth.

Objectives

*The students will name the oceans of the world.

*The students will be introduced to the different surfaces of the ocean floor.

*The students will be introduces to the plants and animals in the ocean.

Activity

We will start the lesson with a brainstorm session about what we know about the ocean. I will write down what they know on chart paper. We will be looking at the chart through out the unit. Then we will read the story The Magic School Bus On The Ocean Floor by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen. The story introduces the names of the oceans, creatures and plants in the ocean. Also, the different surfaces of the ocean floor.

Intertidal zone: the part of the shore that is covered with water at high tide, and uncovered at low tide. Tide pool: puddles of water left on shore when the tide goes out. Continental shelf: the area that stretches from the shore to where the water is four hundred to six hundred feet deep. Ocean floor: After the story will locate the different oceans on the globe. (Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic, Indian)

Assessment

I will observe the children as we are locating the different oceans to see if they can name the oceans.

Materials Needed

Book: The Magic School Bus On The Ocean Floor by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen, chart paper, markers, and globe.
